Youth Scholarships

2024

The Prince Edward Island Fiddlers Society is pleased to offer sponsorship for youth wishing to attend a music camp or workshop that supports the continued growth of traditional fiddle music across PEI.

Bursaries are open to youth Island-wide and can be used to cover the cost of a traditional music lesson, workshop, or camp of their choosing. The society will set aside an amount of money each year to sponsor these activities and the bursaries will be awarded on a first come, first serve basis. Applicants may apply for bursaries more than once, however, priority will go to applicants who have not yet received sponsorship. Money awarded will be sent directly to the instructor/camp on behalf of the applicant.

Past Scholarships

2021

Wendy Mennie-Ashford

Two fiddle camp scholarships will be awarded for summer 2021 in the name of the late Wendy Mennie-Ashford of Beach Point, PEI. Wendy started fiddle lessons at the age of 65 and enjoyed learning over 60 tunes. She loved hearing the young fiddlers perform at the Murray Harbour Ceilidhs. Before she passed away in September, she came up with the idea of selling some of her original paintings and her collection of Christmas décor to help fund youth fiddle camp scholarships. These successfully sold at the Murray Harbour Farmer’s Market and at the Christmas in the Villages craft show, and the proceeds will fund two scholarships, one to be given by the Eastern Kings Fiddlers and one by the Southern Kings Fiddlers. Thank you to Wendy and to the generous people of Murray Harbour who have always been very supportive of the fiddling tradition here on the island.

2020

In light of the uncertainty surrounding COVID-19 and its impact on large gatherings and festivals in the Maritimes this summer, the Society will not be able to offer the Bishop Faber Macdonald Scholarship or any others for summer 2020.
