Three tunes by Annapolis Valley fiddler Ron Goodwin (1925-2003)

By Amy Swenson, President

Ron Goodwin was a well known fiddler and artist from Canning, NS who composed many fiddle tunes and recorded two record albums. He helped found the Kings Fiddlers of Kentville, NS and played with them for years and also at local dances, often accompanied by Carl Bezanson. He played on the Don Messer Show and recorded one of his records with Don’s pianist Waldo Munro. His beautiful tune The Mists of Cape Blomidon was played by the Boston Philharmonic.

I added a harmony part to The Mists of Cape Blomidon, which was sent to the Southern Kings Fiddlers by the late Barry Thompson of the Prince County Fiddlers. Our group has enjoyed playing this evocative tune.

Goodwin’s friend and fellow Kings Fiddlers member, Ron Corkum, kindly sent us a photo of one of Goodwin’s album covers along with one of his fiddle sculptures, and reminded me about the other two Goodwin tunes in the Don Messer collection. In these uncertain times, I find the cheerful hornpipe to be especially medicinal.
